Men's Health 2: Prostate Health + Erectile Dysfunction with CBD & Cannabis (Hook a brother Up 2X)
We had such an interesting discussion on our previous #flowertothepeople segment on Men’s Health that we’ve decided to do a Part Two. There are so many issues that affect men, but based on listener response there are two that really need their own dedicated airtime. Today, we’re focusing on these two critical aspects of men’s health: prostate health and erectile dysfunction (ED). These issues can significantly impact quality of life, particularly for my brothers (African American men). We’ll explore how CBD and cannabis can offer support in these areas, and of course- everything you’ll hear from me is backed by peer-reviewed sources. Let’s end Men’s Health Month on a strong note! 💪🏿
Prostate Health
Prostate health is a significant concern for men, especially as they age. African American men are at a higher risk for prostate cancer and other prostate-related issues. Cannabinoids, particularly CBD, have shown promise in supporting prostate health.
Statistics:
The American Cancer Society reports that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Prostate cancer negatively affects Black men more than men of other races.
African American men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with and 2.4 times more likely to die from prostate cancer than white men.
The history of segregation and mistreatment in the health care system may contribute to mistrust among Black men. One study showed that people living in areas of “lower environmental quality” are at higher risk for prostate cancer.
In another study, it was posited that “it is generally supposed that the Black man accepts physical discomfort, especially that associated with the genito-urinary tract, as a natural event in the course of life and would be slower in seeking medical aid than the White man”.
Outcomes are worse for Black men because they are less likely to be screened or to receive treatment for prostate cancer.
Black men also are unlikely to participate in clinical research, making it difficult for investigators to understand how Black men are affected by prostate cancer.
Prostate Care and Screening: Regular screening is crucial for early detection and management of prostate issues. The American Cancer Society recommends that men discuss prostate cancer screening with their doctor starting at:
Age 50 for men at average risk.
Age 45 for men at high risk, including African American men and those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65.
Age 40 for men at even higher risk, with more than one first-degree relative diagnosed at an early age.
Screening typically includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE) 😱
Prostate Cancer vs. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):
Prostate Cancer: A malignant growth that can spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms may include difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, and pelvic discomfort.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): A non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, common as men age. It can cause urinary problems but doesn’t spread like cancer.
Research Insights: A study in the Indian Journal of Urology found that cannabinoids, especially CBD, can contribute to prostate cancer care in a number of ways including decreasing the viability of prostate cancer cells and managing pain This suggests a potential role for CBD in prostate cancer care.
Pearls:
Cancer Cell Inhibition: CBD may help inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells, offering a potential complementary therapy.
Symptom Management: Cannabis can help manage symptoms related to prostate issues, such as pain and inflammation.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction is a common issue that can affect men's self-esteem and relationships. It can be caused by various factors, including stress, anxiety, and poor cardiovascular health. Cannabis, particularly CBD, might offer some relief by addressing these underlying issues.
Statistics:
Some studies report that approximately 52% of men experience some form of ED, with the likelihood increasing with age.
African American men may face higher rates of ED due to increased risks of hypertension and diabetes.
African American men may also experience higher rates of psychogenic erectile dysfunction.
Research Insights: CBD has been found to help reduce anxiety, a common contributor to ED. A study published in Neurotherapeutics noted that CBD has significant potential as a treatment for anxiety, which can help improve sexual performance.
Men vs. Women: ED in men is often tied to psychological factors like anxiety and stress, which can create a cycle of performance anxiety. Unlike women, who may experience different sexual health issues, men with ED can benefit from CBD’s calming effects to break this cycle.
Prostate Disorders and ED: Treatments for prostate disorders, such as surgery (prostatectomy) and radiation, can contribute to the development of ED. These treatments can damage nerves and blood vessels involved in erections. Additionally, medications for prostate issues can have side effects that impact sexual function.
Psychological Effects: Prostate disorders can lead to significant psychological stress, contributing to anxiety and depression. This mental health impact can further exacerbate ED.
Pearls:
Anxiety Reduction: CBD’s ability to reduce anxiety can help improve sexual performance by alleviating performance-related stress.
Improved Blood Flow: Some studies suggest that cannabinoids can improve blood flow, which is crucial for maintaining erections.
Using Cannabis for Prostate and ED Issues
For Prostate Issues:
Pain Management: Cannabis can be used to manage pain associated with prostate surgery or radiation. It can be consumed through various methods such as oils, edibles, or topicals and suppositories applied directly to the affected area.
Anti-Inflammatory: CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce inflammation and discomfort related to prostate treatments.
For Erectile Dysfunction:
Anxiety Relief: Consuming CBD oil or capsules can help reduce anxiety levels, improving sexual performance.
Topical Applications: CBD-infused intimate oils applied to the pelvic area may help with localized pain and improve blood flow.
