DIY Suppositories and CBD

DIY Suppositories and CBD

The best part of what we do is having conversations with our patients about what their needs are and finding solutions for them. In the past few years, we’ve had a number of patients come in seeking assistance with the side effects of prostate treatment. We used to send out patients to dispensaries to purchase suppositories, but unfortunately that's no longer an option. Suppositories are a unique form of medication administration that involves inserting a solid dosage form into the rectum, vagina, or urethra, where it dissolves and is absorbed by the body. They are commonly used to deliver medications for conditions like hemorrhoids, constipation, inflammation, and even pain management. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using CBD (cannabidiol) in suppositories to harness its potential therapeutic benefits. Let’s examine how CBD suppositories can help manage a few conditions… now take a deep breath…this won't hurt a bit 🙂

Understanding the Condition

What Are Suppositories?

Suppositories are solid, cone-shaped dosage forms that melt at body temperature, releasing medication directly into the bloodstream. This method can provide faster and more direct relief for certain conditions compared to oral medications. Are you curious about making your own CBD suppositories? Check this link out! I recommend adding 1mL of our Pure Tincture to the base of the mold

The Potential Benefits of Cannabis and CBD

CBD, derived from the cannabis plant, has gained attention for its potential therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-anxiety properties. CBD suppositories offer a novel way to deliver these benefits directly to affected areas.

Routes of Administration

Rectal Suppositories: CBD is absorbed quickly through the rectal mucosa, offering fast relief. This method bypasses the liver and provides higher bioavailability. However, this may cause local irritation.

Prostate Health

Prostate health is a significant concern, especially for men over the age of 50. Conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis can cause discomfort and urinary issues.

CBD for Prostate Health:

CBD may help manage symptoms of prostate conditions by reducing inflammation and pain.

Vaginal Suppositories: Used for menstrual pain and pelvic discomfort. This method provides localized relief and minimal systemic effects. Unfortunately, there is limited research on long-term effects.

CBD for Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) can cause significant discomfort and impact daily activities. Traditional and holistic treatments aim to alleviate pain and improve quality of life. CBD can provide relief from menstrual cramps through its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

CBD for Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and reproductive issues. CBD may offer benefits for managing fibroid symptoms by reducing inflammation and pain.

Wrapping It All Up

Suppositories are a versatile and effective method for delivering medication, especially for those who have difficulties with oral administration. Traditional treatments offer reliable relief but may come with side effects. Holistic approaches, while gentler, may require more time to show results. Incorporating CBD into suppositories presents a promising alternative, leveraging the therapeutic benefits of cannabis in a direct and efficient manner.

Pearls:

If you’re considering traditional methods, holistic approaches, or CBD treatments, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your specific needs, and always purchase from reputable sources. Now that we’re done talking about suppositories, you can breathe and relax now. That didn’t hurt too much, did it? 🙂
